There is much to see and do in West Yellowstone in the winter. All of our units are located a short distance to the world renowned Rendezvous Ski Trails; the miles of snowmobiling trails throughout MT, ID, and WY and many other attractions. Many of our guests ask when our favorite time of year is in Yellowstone National Park. It is a resounding “in the winter”. Yellowstone National Park is totally different in the winter than summer. Everything has its “winter attire on” – that is, it is blanketed in snow – geysers become truly a “winter wonderland” with all of the springs frosting the trees. Plus, the bison get masks on - white whiskers all around their faces. Then, the geysers like Morning Glory with all of its rich colors – azure, green, blues, yellows and many other colors are offset by the white snow around them.

SNOWMOBILING:
Outside Yellowstone National Park: With its extensive trail systems and the close proximity of the town to Yellowstone National Park, West Yellowstone is affectionately called the snowmobile capitol of the world. From West Yellowstone, you can enjoy hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails in a three state region – Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. This is the starting point to enjoy a winter wonderland of unparalleled beauty.

Want trails? We got 'em. Imagine a long day of day cruising the 400-plus miles of groomed trails in the national forests and other public lands, then returning to the comfortable accommodations, snowmobiling camaraderie, and nightlife back in town. The next morning begins an entirely new adventure!

The West Yellowstone area provides a wide range trails that meet the demands of beginning, intermediate, and experienced riders. Whether you prefer steady, mellow cruising with few elevation changes, or you are craving the powdery steeps, there are plenty of options for everyone.

Two Top Trail is a popular choice. The variety of terrain and 2,000 foot elevation gain makes it that popular, the views are magnificent, the trail is groomed and powder fields abound.

The Big Sky Trail provides some of the best backcountry snowmobiling in Montana. This 110-mile trail begins just north of West Yellowstone. The first portion is fields of snow and outstanding hill climbing opportunities are the hallmark of this well known and challenging trail.

Lionshead Trail offers an exciting experience for those seeking something more radical. Following the east side of the Continental Divide, the trail climbs to over 10,000 feet. Lionshead is a short (10 miles), but sweet, with plenty of the steep terrain, very deep snow, and outstanding views.
 

Horse Butte Loop travels the shores of Hebgen Lake. This trail makes a pleasant excursion through thick pines and open meadows and along the lake. South Plateau Trail heads south for 13 miles and provides great views of the area's mountains,
following creeks and rivers away from the crowds.

The Continental Divide Trail offers a unique snow travel experience, connecting central Wyoming with our community via Yellowstone National Park. The trail system begins near Lander, Wyoming at Sinks Canyon, and winds through the Wind River Mountains near Pinedale and Dubois. The trail then passes through Togwotee Pass and Moran before entering Grand Teton National Park in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The trail follows the Rockefeller Parkway and ends at Yellowstone’s southern entrance.

Need we say more? Clearly the West Yellowstone area is a paradise for snowmobiling enthusiasts. With so much snow, trail variety, and spectacular scenery,
it is no wonder our destination consistently earns top reviews. West Yellowstone is truly the "Snowmobiling Capital of the World".

In Yellowstone National Park: The riding is controlled, offering less freedom than the terrain outside the park, but seeing the park's many features in their "winter attire" is a unique experience. All trips are done on “BAT” snowmobiles with guides. BAT is the best available technology snowmobile. These are much quieter and better for the environment than your regular snowmobile.

SNOW COACH AND CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING IN YELLOWSTONE:
One of the greats trips into Yellowstone in the winter is to take a snow coach into Yellowstone and have the driver drop you off at Biscuit Basin. From there it is an easy 2-3 mile trip up to Old Faithful plus the many other wonderful geysers like Grand Geyser (makes Old Faithful seem small); Sawmill Geyser (yes it sounds like a sawmill) and many others. The pools like Morning Glory and Sapphire are truly amazing to see. Have lunch at the Lodge there and take the snow coach back to our cabins.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING OUTSIDE YELLOWSTONE:
Hundreds of Nordic skiers come to West Yellowstone each year. West Yellowstone is an official training site of the United States Nordic and Biathlon Ski Teams. From the Yellowstone Ski Festival in November to the Rendezvous Ski Race in March, West Yellowstone offers something for everyone. Nordic skiers of all abilities will find our early snowfalls, gentle terrain and limitless trails the perfect setting for a memorable ski vacation.
